During the school year, Haitian and Haitian-American youth are invited to attend a weekly event, which includes activities, a free lunch and informal mentoring sessions. The organized activities include but are not limited to soccer, volleyball and basketball. Through engaging the young people physically, opportunities are created to create friendships and mentoring relationships with the supervising adults. In addition, the young people also have regularly scheduled formal sessions which cover topics such as resisting peer pressure, staying off drugs, tools for success in school and college preparation and funding. These formal sessions are a mixture of recorded and live presentations as well as question and answer sessions. In conjunction with the youth program, a parent/family/caretaker program also occurs. Once a month all family members of participating youth are invited to a meeting, which addresses pertinent topics such as parenting, the differences in Haitian and American cultures and family communication. Most of last year sport events took place in public parks in Evanston and Chicago, Illinois. Future plans would incorporate service projects and music lessons into the regular events, organizing a related sports program during the summer months and finding a more permanent home for the events. HOHAYE is a 501c3 organization. |
